Digital Release: Eve no Jikan ACT 03 Subtitles
<--- (Definitely not the KITAAAAA look.) Yes, at long last, it’s done. I once again apologise for the slowness of this episode, but for those who do not follow this blog, I was in Japan until my return on the 15th, after which I had to get back into the cycle of things as well as do various things like processing photos. However, I suspended photo processing and now ACT 03 subtitles are good to go. As previously agreed to with Directions, pireze now only distributes the subtitles for Eve no Jikan, although the videos are not at all hard to find. You might want to right-click and save the link, because sometimes the browsers like to render the file as text. [Download: Version 1.0 Subtitles in .ASS format] [Bigger fonts version]
For this subtitle release, I must once again thank my translation helper, and Directions for their understanding and assistance.
At this current stage, the license for the subtitles remains as they have been previously. Please feel free to modify them, distribute them, and use them as needed, as long as they are not used to generate a profit. A possible addendum to this provides an exception for Directions to use them commercially.
Translation notes:
In the “super cool secret service assassin and guns with people in suits” scenes, the person the agents say was hard to translate. Possible other translations are “The VIP” or “The subject”. They actually say “MARUTAI” in katakana. I am guessing this is a code name of sorts (like how Obama is code named Renegade), although I did some Googling, and it is a possible reference to a 1997 movie called “Marutai no Onna”, which has an English title translation of “Woman in Witness Protection”. For this reason, the subject has been translated as “Protected Witness”.
At 06:30, Masaki uses the term “Shuraba” which is derived, interesting, from the mythological realm of Asura, thought to be a hellish place. In the Japanese language, this has become a term (修羅場) for a scene of a fight, or a place of carnage.
When subtitling, since you are pretty much going line by line, some of the nuances become much more clear-cut. For example, Masaki at 12:04 says the line “駄目人間じゃねえか” (dame ningen ja nee ka), and in the next two or three seconds he catches himself as he realises he has just referred to a robot as a human (“ningen”).
The reason for Masaki getting on Rikuo’s case (in case it is not already clear in the anime) wasn’t because Rikuo was being a perv (which wouldn’t make sense, since Masaki was also a healthy young male), but because of what he perceived to be Rikuo’s Dori-kei characteristics causing him to look at androids in a sexual manner. This is why later, when Rikuo asked Masaki if he had awakened, Rikuo (knowing Rina was an android) was actually asking Masaki if he had awakened *as a Dori-kei*, while Masaki (thinking Rina was human) misunderstood that question as one of sexual awakening (puberty).
Since I have been “out of action” for so long, I am guessing most blogs will have already covered this episode of Eve no Jikan, so I will just leave you with a couple of things I found interesting.
Behold my Mystic Eyes of Death Perception!
Oops, wrong anime.
The Ethics Committee back with their scare tactics. They get points for style though.
Spot the anime!
Spot the cute hair accessory!
Looks like Koji is quite the pro. I mean, with his camera phone and all.
I agree.
Let’s take a sticker photo!
Do you know this is real technology?
Resist, Akiko, resist!
Wham!
What you say? A GIGAPIXEL phone?
A familiar way of organising images.
orz. Or do I mean |orz ?
Again with the clarifying diagram.
I LIKE IT TANAKA-SAN, I REALLY LIKE IT!!! (I actually didn’t notice it until I was subtitling and Rikuo mentioned it. I thought he was talking about her totally unnecessary halo, but then I thought “Pink is such a hideous colour” and then I realised Tanaka-san was being cuter than usual. Though her pony-tail look is better.)
Warm body detected. BRAIIIIIINS!!
New character!
I like Yoshiura’s humour, especially how he points things out like these.
Anyway, as has been widely reported, ACT 04 will not be released until April 2009, so let’s have fun until then! The preview announcement on this episode could also be hinting at there being more goodness to come after ACT 06.

Good job! I’ve already watched the episode, being the BADASS RAW WATCHER that I am, but the parts concerning the secret service and bodyguard and such were really hard to understand.
Still this was an awesome episode for all the twists. Kept me guessing right up till the end. Loved the parts with Sammy in it too, hehe.
Lastly, that robot guy in the preview for ACT 04 is… interesting. 4 month wait for it though :(.
Excellent work as always. I look forward to rewatching this – I find streaming to be a bit jerky when compared with watching downloads and copyleft subs, and this is the sort of thing that is rewarding to watch over again anyway. You’ve just made my weekend. ^_^
In any case, I hope you had a good holiday and happy christmas to you!
I am a regular at this blog but I don’t comment very often. However, with that said, this is another of your selfless acts that must not go without having being thanked for. Thank you for all you’ve done and what’s to come. Cute Kara no Kyoukai screen there XD.

I lol’ed at 1:24 in Eve 03.
Hey, I was going to release a hardcoded version of this episode since I usually keep my videos in AVI but I wanted to ask permission to release it with your subs. The only changes I made to the subs were some typsetting and effects in some parts of the episodes (none of the translations were altered).
Thanks

I’m not 100% sure, but I sense that is either a parody or reference to One Piece.
