Event Report: SMASH Anime Convention (UNSW)
Today, I left the house at 7:40am to catch the first bus. The day was cool and bright, but steadily became more cloudy, though I am not sure if it ended up raining. I first went to the Sydney Design 07 Young Blood day event for around 45 minutes, then went to the Smash Convention. I brought my camera and the GorillaPod, though it was not much use in terms of stabilising shots due to the difficult lighting conditions. Sorry for some of the poor images.
The line was quite long for entry into the convention space (Roundhouse at UNSW). From the bus you could see the line extending from the venue into and across the main walkway of the university. Wait time was around half an hour. At the point the photo below was taken, I had already waited around 20 minutes in line, and the total length of the line is around 4 times that which you see here.
The main stage, viewed from the second level, plus the commercial shops which are on the first level, including anime shops and Madman Entertainment. The second floor has local artist circles lining the walls.
The Butler cafe (and the maid cafe, which I couldn't get pictures of) were pretty conventional. Not trappy.
Courtyard had three stalls selling hot food: takoyaki, pancakes and some other store I don't know about.
Rob at the OzPainters stall, doing his UCHIkoma, and the finished product.
There was also a Dollfie display stall next to the OzPainters stall.
Random stall photos. I didn't buy anything due to C72 spending splurge coming up.
Cosplay stuff: I tried to get some of the better ones.
On-stage "Iron Cosplay" contest, of 2 groups of 3 people making costumes in 10 minutes from newspaper, tape and cardboard box. The host's parody of chairman Kaga (Iron Chef) was well received by the crowd.
The little girls team got beaten by the Naru-/b/tard team's "Not Gundam". After reviewing the photos, I at last realise what the girls were trying to make. It's ERGO PROXY! (the newspaper hair would really work as Ergo Proxy, but I don't think they intended it to be Ergo Proxy).
Stage Cosplay Event: there's an L, a Densha Otoko, a Shinji, and an Anonymous "Pool's Closed", plus some we've seen above.
Notes:
- The Haruhi panel wasn't a panel -- it was just a screening of episode 00 and episode 01. BOO.
- Venue was big enough to hold everyone, but the second floor rooms were confusing as some doors were well-hidden.
- The Shinji dude didn't HAVE to play the whole of Kanon in D. Really. Keep it short already.
