Hunting the Elusive

The joy of the chase

"One More Time, One More Chance" Lyrics translation

This was actually done some time back for the Makoto Shinkai fanweb, but daike is yet to update his site for this, so I'll put up my lyrics first. For the transliteration, you will have to wait for MSFN, or go to one of the many sources around the net.

Translation notes: I formatted the translation according to the structure in the liner notes of the single CD, and also in stanza 7 (just after the bridge) where it says "akegata no machi", the kanji in the CD leaflet for "machi" is 街 which translated for me to "street" (normally by listening to it, you would think machi is town). I also had a problem with 旅先の店 ("tabisaki no mise"). I translated it to traveller's store, but I have searched the phrase online and it seems to indicate its a type of store in Japan, probably a type of food store like "fast food store", "convenience (konbini) store", "sushi train store", "corner store", etc. Maybe it's a ramen food stand type of place?

One More Time, One More Chance

Writing: Masayoshi Yamazaki

Arrangement: Toshiyuki Mori

Transliteration and translation: daike

Translation support: Emma

Translation edit: icie

How much more do I have to lose, before my heart is forgiven?
How many more pains do I have to suffer, to meet you once again?
One more time, oh seasons, fade not
One more time, when we were messing around

Whenever we disagreed, I would always give in first
Your selfish nature made me love you even more
One more chance, the memories restrain my steps
One more chance, I cannot choose my next destination

I'm always searching, for your figure to appear somewhere
On the opposite platform, in the windows along the lane
Even though I know you couldn't be at such a place
If my wish were to come true, I would be at your side right away
There would be nothing I couldn't do
I would put everything on the line and hold you tight
________________________________________
If I just wanted to avoid loneliness, anybody would have been enough.
Because the night looks like the stars will fall, I cannot lie to myself.
One more time, oh seasons, fade not.
One more time, when we were messing around

I'm always searching, for your figure to appear somewhere
At a street crossing, in the midst of dreams
Even though I know you couldn't be at such a place
If a miracle were to happen here, I would show you right away
The new morning, who I'll be from now on
And the words I never said: "I love you."
________________________________________
The memories of summer are revolving
The throbbing which suddenly disappeared

I'm always searching, for your figure to appear somewhere
At dawn on the streets, at Sakuragi-cho
Even though I know you couldn't be at such a place
If my wish were to come true, I would be at your side right away
There would be nothing I couldn't do
I would put everything on the line and hold you tight

I'm always searching, for fragments of you to appear somewhere
At a traveller's store, in the corner of newspaper,
Even though I know you couldn't be at such a place
If a miracle were to happen here, I would show you right away
The new morning, who I'll be from now on
And the words I never said: "I love you."

I always end up looking for your smile, to appear somewhere
At the railroad crossing, waiting for the express to pass
Even though I know you couldn't be at such a place
If our lives could be repeated, I would be at your side every time
I would want nothing else
Besides you, nothing else matters

i’ve just watched the first part of the 5cm/s series a week ago and this song caught my attention. it suits perfectly with the anime, its my favorite at the moment and i think nothing could beat this one. thank you very very much for the translation.

  4. [...] 2008, Tokyo is the setting for the final chapter. Takaki is still single, Akari has moved on in life and is married, and the distance between them is now impossible to bridge. But they still remember each other, and for Takaki, she still remains the one and only person he thinks about, as evinced by his (for lack of better word) stalker, who writes that “Even if we were to exchange 1000 emails, our hearts would probably not move even one centimeter closer”. The music video which takes up a major part of this chapter and which ends the entire anthology plays the part of uniting everything: not just the duologue between Takaki and Akari, but also the previous two stories, providing snapshots which fill in the missing pieces. In compact form, and to moving lyrics, it summarises the mundane storm of life which steadily distances people, and dismantles our dreams bit by bit. We end with Takaki supposedly moving on…but is that really possible for him? [...]

    now I know why this song has been making me cry from the first time I saw the movie ;_;

thanks for this, lol a funny note this song was used on the hard gay episode where he tries to set a guy up with the girl he likes

    he fails…

  8. icie August 17th, 2007 4:33 am

apparently the song is actually pretty old (it was the theme song of some old drama series or something) and pretty much everyone in Japan knows about it. Makoto Shinkai wanted to express the everyday normalcy of his story, so he used this song that everyone knows.

  9. Felix August 19th, 2007 8:27 am

I just watched the film on the big screen at a special screening. Didn’t cry when the song went on during the film, though the subtitles did tell part of the lyrics and got me to the verge of tears. Now, I know why I was moved, and I know why I cried before I wrote this. Thank you.

BTW, echoing on what icie said, the song was released 10 years ago in Japan, according to its entry on Wikipedia Japan. (http://tinyurl.com/2yeraw)

the song is beautiful but sad.just to hear it, its making my heart so sad.

I just watched the entire movie last night. I’d have to say, a movie hasn’t affected me as much as this one has. As corny as this sounds, I related to all the feelings Takaki felt, and even the experience of loving someone but having them move far away and probably never seeing them again. I think this movie touched me so much because I saw my own life in it.

This song was also amazing, I thank you a lot for posting its translation up online.

Yes..beautiful movie, so real, so profound..I don’t usually leave mesages on sites..but this time, late at night I just felt I had to do it, because it’s like I say my life in it..the waiting, the desperation, the sadness, the wreck, the impossible. The point in which you collapse, when u’re not falling inlove, you’re just falling to pieces now. It seems like you’re giving up, maybe they both gave up the waiting but not their true feelings, and that makes it all beautiful.

  21. syaf February 10th, 2008 5:36 am

I think the tabisaki no mise thing that you’re looking up, it’s one of those pitstop convenience stores for long road trips. If you’ve seen those in America, they’re trucker shops: places where people can stop by for food and a bathroom break if they’re on a long roadtrip down an empty intersection.
    It’s worth a guess.

This song described how my feeling really was..At first i never knew i was fallen in love cause i was so young to realize it. but now i’m hardly waiting for a moment where i thought “Ah..it’s been a while i dont think about him”

but still like the song lyrics, where ever i go, i’m still being a fool hoping a miracle for his figure to appear somewhere someday..

    thnks,for the lyrics translation :)

the anime movie is one of the best i have ever seen, the drawing was so beautiful, and the the way the story is told is quite unique. The song/lyrics fits the story perfectly well. i have to say 10/10 for the whole.

I can also relate to the story… but somehow, i wish it wont end up like the anime.

    Thank you for posting this…
