Garnet et al: 彩景 – Saikei -
Official title 東方project 色彩合同誌「彩景 -saikei-」is a collaboration fanbook, presented by multiple artists, including Garnet and LunadeLuna. It is 28 pages long (26 if you do not include blank inside covers). Like the Colors section in Etsu, the pictures are classified according to colour. There are 14 illustrations in all, as well as pages in between with artist comments and such. While there are only a few pictures that I really like, it’s quite a good way to discover new artists. The cover is actually quite interesting, with a retro Japanese kinda feel (the lanterns, the clock, the old-school automobile, etc).
Momijiiro, by GARNET, is quite an interesting picture, as this artist isn’t actually all that good at character illustrations and faces (as can be seen from the cover picture). However, GARNET excels at scenery, and this picture exploits that to great advantage.
White and Black are next to each other. Whereas White again focuses on the scenery and the open spaces, Black contrasts not just with colour, but also with the atmosphere. The black levels are turned up so high that we get an oppressive atmosphere, being barely able to make out the character. In some cases, hiding details rather than making everything visible can be what makes a picture striking.
Violet and Vermillion. There is generally a very faithful adherence to the given colour themes. Particularly like the background of Violet.
Green is a very strange illustration. I’m sure reading the explanatory notes would help, but what’s with the bloody helmet? I also really like Red, with the slightly realistic faces and again the very nice lighting effects.
These are fairly average, though I quite like the miniatures idea of errr, Fairy Green. Garnet makes an appearance again.
Another White, and very outstanding. I believe I have come across this artist before, and their texture really reminds me of Keiichi Sumi’s.
Yellow is Alice! Again one of those really dark pictures with dim lighting effects. I really like it! I think I am a newly made fan of Lunade Luna (Nabeshima Testsuhiro).
